Sporting Tradition

or gettin' it healthy around town

This is a web page posted in conjunction with a show of 21 of my photos at the

Brighton Heritage Museum 20 Chestnut Hill Avenue, Brighton Center MA 02135

during the months of September and October 2010.

Although sports in Boston is not exclusively baseball,

how can you have a sports page without starting with the Red Sox?

Green Monster Wall Ball

"Under the Green Monster"

This photo was taken from outside Fenway Park under the Green Monster
on Fantasy Day 2010.  I copied the wide angle shot and flipped it in Photoshop
to take on the shape of a ball, but it probably looks more like the inside of a golf ball
than a baseball.  In any case, it's my favorite shot of the show.

Grey Day Race

"Gray Day Racing"

This was a balmy day on the Charles from the Cambridge side near MIT.
In my younger years I was a racing skipper in Mercury sailboats in the
Sunday morning races at Community Boating Inc. (CBI)

Boating at Dusk on the Charles

"Boating at Dusk on the Charles"

This was what appeared to be a family of three girls and their mother geting into a kayak
on the Charles River near the Herter Park section by Soldiers Field Road.

Grokking the Chuck

"Grokking the Chuck"

Yep it's the same family grokking along, which I used in the name since they were visitors
from Asia and couldn't wait to get into the water.  It reminded me of the time I was in Kobe Japan
and couldn't wait to get into a tour boat in the Kobe harbor which felt like the sea linked me with Boston harbor.
Looking at the Japanese moon had the same effect on my senses, and linked me with Boston sky.
All of which were somehow inspired by Robert Heinlein's book "Stranger in a Strange Land".
I wonder if this family felt the same way.

Triplet on the Turn

"Triplet on the Turn"

This guy was caught 3 times while I was panning my camera and was positioned the way you see it
by Photoshop in the Photo Merge process, almost like capturing time.

Late Fall on the Charles

"Late Fall on the Charles River"

My daughter especially loves this photo and I love it too for the colors, waves, red kayak and great birch tree trunk accents on the bank.

Local Color

"Local Color"

Kinda like candy kayaks.

"Beached Boats

"School of Kayaks"

They looked so much like a pile of dolphins just before nightfall while I was roaming in the gloaming with my lass.

At Rest

"At Rest"

This was shot near CBI behind the two small islands. Two of the boats are gondolas which are normally in the lagoon.

Canoeing in the Pond

"Canoeing in the Esplanade Pond"

What would it be like without the trees?

Portageby the Falls

"Portage by the Falls"

This canoe couple means business on the Charles near the Watertown Falls.  Look at those duds.

Community Rowing Glass Building

"Community Rowing Glass Building"

They also have a great wooden building both designed by Anmahian Winton Architects, Inc. of Cambridge MA,
contracted and built by a company that my brother-in-law works for.  Thank you all and great job Brian.

Biking by the Speedway

"Biking by the Speedway"

Most people are not aware that these stable buildings on Western Ave in Brighton, were once home to horses used for buggy racing
that was held on what is now Soldiers Field Road.  What grand days those must have been!  Let's dig up the asphalt and do it again!

Cruisin' by the Ruins

"Cruisin' by the Ruins"

This was a day after a large wind storm in Boston that took down a bunch of 100+ year old willows.
Can you see the man with the chain saw in th tree cuttin' it up?

Half Staff by the Hatch

"Half Staff by the Hatch"

This was the same day when there were some children playing around the shell under the watchfull eye
of their parents, but I caught the site with their complimentary colored orange bike and no kids.
I like to think that the flag was half staff, partly for the downed trees.

Leiderman Park Run

"Lederman Park Run"

I've been shooting the Longfellow Bridge a lot lately due to the fact that they will be repairing and painting it soon,
and I'm capturing all the glory of rust.  Maybe they should paint it orange like the Golden Gate Bridge and the Tokyo Tower?

Charles River Fest

"Charles River Fest"

This shot goes from Brighton side near the Anderson Bridge to the Brighton side near the Weeks bridge
and Harvard Business School.   I printed it 16 feet long on canvas as requested by the curator John Quatrale.
>>> please scroll to the right to see the whole panorama >>>

Head of the Charles Race

"Head of the Charles Regatta"

This was a gray day, but I managed to get this panorama, and it has 5 racing boats.  I printed it 12 feet long on canvas.

In conclusion, I don't think of myself as a sportsman these days, but I do get a lot of exercise chasing all these photos. :)  - FG
